Mahamaham (lit. "Great Dance") is a Hindu festival occurring during the month of Chitrai (March-April) in the Tamil calendar. It celebrates the cosmic union of Shiva and Shakti, who rose to dance in ecstasy, after their separation at Kailash during the churning of oceans. Several invocations are chanted at this time by Brahmins entreating "Omkantaraya" • Omkar meaning "One who dwells in Kailash", which creates an instant change in one's karma and surrounding environment therewith. Maha Yagna conducted once every 12 years for this purpose is called Maha Sabham or Mahasivaratri. This festival is celebrated as a preparation for the Maha Yagna. Chitra Pournami is celebrated on the 100th day after Deepavali, and it is celebrated as a remembrance of Chitra Pournami festival in Brahma's home. The tenth day of the waxing moon in Chithirai (April) was called as Bhoga Saptami, which meant that people would rest from their labor today. The ninth day, called as Bhoga Dashmi or Bhogirathri, was a day from where they would resume their work. During this period, people used to worship Lord Ganesha and invoked the protection of Mother Parvathi. Women would also worship Goddess Kali and built mandapams (worship halls) for her. Young girls used to wear garlands of flowers and carry sacred books (Sanskrit-Devapatha) on this day, which they would read by the banks of the rivers. They would pray for a good husband and children. Mumukshunrkai is the common chant: "Mother, who is like my body, who comes out from my body and gives me her blessings? Who is like my mind? Who is like my wealth???" This festival was celebrated with great fervor throughout Tamil Nadu. In South India it is celebrated in a big way in the districts of Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. A large number of people gather on this day to take a dip in the sea. During the “Bhogi” before going for a dip, people eat vegetarian food and exchange gifts. Fruit dealers sell "Bhogi peya" (fruit cakes) and "Kunkuma seva" (anointing with turmeric powder) is offered to people irrespective of their religious beliefs or caste affiliation. Special sweets called "Modakam" are offered to the God at Hindu Temples across Tamil Nadu on this day. "Modakam" is a sweet made of rice flour and "Ampalapu" is also prepared. These two items will be distributed at houses and shops and will be offered as an offering to God. Ladies would visit temples on this day and offer pooja (worship) to the Goddess. Special "Kumbabishekam" (sacred thread ceremony) is done for girls on this day as well as for boys on the next day (the 11th day). This festival is celebrated by Muslims for their ancestors on the 26th day of the first month of Islamic calendar, which falls between 22nd and 25 July according to their calendar. cfa1e77820
