Kung Fu Hustle is a 2004 Chinese-Hong Kong comedy martial arts film written and directed by Stephen Chow, who also stars in the lead role. The film was nominated for international awards, and won 11 Hong Kong Film Awards including Best Picture. It is a parody of wuxia films that portrays an alternative world where kung fu masters have superpowers. Besides its cinematic release, Kung Fu Hustle has been excerpted as a television series that aired on Singapore Television from June 2005 to August 2006. The film's success in East Asia turned Chow into a major celebrity, and he began to be known by the nickname "King of Comedy". The film is set in the 1940s in a town controlled by Chinese gangsters, who are also tong leaders. Sing (Stephen Chow) is an aspiring member of the Dragon Mob, led by Brother Sum (Tung Cho). He meets Gong (Daoming Chen), who makes a living making counterfeit money for the mob. Being unsuccessful at fighting the higher-ranked members, Sing tries to impress Gong with fancy moves he learned from watching martial arts movies. Kung Fu Hustle also won two Golden Rooster Awards for "Best Film" and "Best Director" in 2005. The film has been released with English subtitles in over 30 territories. It is among the highest-grossing films in Hong Kong, earning HK$28,279,321 () at the box office. Kung Fu Hustle was one of three films nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards. It was the first time a Chinese language film has been nominated for an Oscar since Shangri-La in 1938. The film ultimately lost to "Munyurangabo". Before its release, Stephen Chow had announced that he would retire from acting in order to concentrate on his directing career after 10 years of doing both jobs. However, after seeing how well Kung Fu Hustle was received, Chow announced that he would star in only one more film before definitely retiring. Miramax Films bought the U.S. distribution rights for $5 million and released the film on 23 December 2004 in the United States, grossing $17 million.
